Writing About the Poem
"The Raven" was written by Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe was one of North America's greatest literary figures. Although he was so famous, he had a sad life. He died when he was forty. The poem talks about one dark December night; a poet is feeling tired and sad. He hears a rapping in his door. When he opens the door, no one is there. He only hears a voice saying "Lenore". He calls out, but no one answers. Later, he hears the knock again, and he sees a raven when he opens the door. The raven flied in and sits on the head of a statue over the door, when the poet asked for its name, it says "Nevermore".
This poem takes place in a cold and dark December night, in a poet's chamber, which has windows with purple silk, lattice, and a statue of Pallas. The mood of the poem is melancholy, sad and suspense. As it says, "here I opened wide the door; ---darkness there and nothing more," "from my books surcease of sorrow; ---sore for the lost Lenore" and "quote the Raven 'Nevermore' ". I think the author makes a sad mood because of his sad life. He also uses some poetic device in the poem, such as assonance, alliteration, metaphor, repetition, and rhyme. "Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before" is an example of alliteration; "but with mien of lord of lady" is an example of metaphor; " the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore" is an example of assonance; The author repeats some words in the poem, such as "Lenore", "more", "door", and "raven". In addition, he uses rhyme in his poem. The rhyme scheme for the first stanza, "dreary, weary, lore, tapping, door, door, more" is "a, a, b, c, b, b, b", and each stanza has the same rhyme scheme.
After I read this poem several times, I understood it better and I love this poem. O like the way that author used to express the mood and the rhyme, which makes it easy to remember the poem. I also like the subject of the poem since it’s not a human, but a raven. In addition, I like the mood that the author makes. The mysteriousness makes the poem more interesting and makes me think about the past.
